Fantastic literature has always had the power to captivate and inspire reflection, offering unique perspectives on reality. When the subject of reflection is J.R.R. Tolkien, the boundary between fiction and philosophy becomes so thin that it almost disappears: the popular becomes profound, and imagination turns into an opportunity for ethical, political and social analysis.
This will be the central theme of the open lecture scheduled for May 29 at 10:35 AM in Room A09 at the Pontifical Salesian University, where two volumes exploring Tolkien’s universe from original and thought-provoking perspectives will be presented:
- The Council and the Crown. The art of politics in Middle-earth (Eterea Editions)
- Tolkien between reality and fantasy. A new key to interpretation* (Giubilei Regnani Editions)
Both texts are curated by prof. Simone Budini, professor of Political Philosophy, in collaboration with Angelo Mereghetti SDB and prof. Ivano Sassanelli, who will guide the audience on an intellectual journey between Middle-earth and the great questions of our time.
During the event, key themes in Tolkien’s thought will be discussed, such as the meaning of power, the value of community, everyday heroism, and the role of counsel in public governance. This unique opportunity invites participants to reinterpret Tolkien’s works with fresh eyes and discover how his writings resonate—even, and perhaps especially—with the present.
An open invitation to students, enthusiasts, and the curious to step through the doors of fantasy and unexpectedly find themselves at the heart of reality. Participation is free.
