Open lecture on social photography: images that tell stories, raise awareness and inspire change

An opportunity to explore the narrative and ethical potential of social photography, a genre that goes beyond aesthetics to become a tool of testimony and transformation
  7 maggio 2025

The Faculty of Social Communication Sciences organized an open lecture titled “Social photography. Documenting fragility, raising awareness, contributing to change”.

The event offered an opportunity to explore the narrative and ethical power of social photography, a genre that goes beyond aesthetics to serve as a tool for testimony and transformation. Through visual storytelling of individuals, communities and territories often marginalized or forgotten, social photography becomes a voice for the voiceless, helping to generate awareness and inspire action.

The event, held within the course Theory and techniques: photography and visual communication taught by Prof. Tommaso Sardelli, featured the participation of photographers Silvia Superbi and Fabio Moscatelli, founders of the project Frame for life: photography and cinema for the Third sector. Their experience provided deeper insight into the role of imagery in social communication and advocacy efforts.

During the lecture, the 1st Urban Peripheries Photography Festival was also presented. Promoted by Frame for Life, the festival is scheduled to take place from May 16 to 18, 2025, in the Tor Bella Monaca district of Rome. This initiative aims to spotlight urban outskirts as places of creativity, resilience, and humanity, using the universal language of photography.
